Quite the opposite is true: Perl is a tool to get things done. (And IMHO, the best general-purpose tool for getting things done.) It does not matter if you use perl to make your network run smoothly, to fiddle with genomes and proteines, or just to adapt one legacy system to a future legacy system. Software is not developed as a form of art (it can be one), but to solve problems.
