Excellent idea ++. But I am unfortunately not able to help with PDL.

It's a bit funny: just a few days ago, I was thinking about possibly carrying out a somewhat similar exercise (namely a port to Perl) with this: https://krother.gitbooks.io/python-3-basics-tutorial/content/en/.
