I have a question that's been gnawing away at me, but since almost no one posts to alt.perl anymore, and no one on CLPM engages in discussions, I thought I'd bring it here.
Anyway, recent discussion has started me wondering whether the CGI module needs to have some of the gas let out of it. I've read a number of complaints about its name-space hogging and the consequent conflicts with other modules, and speaking largely from personal experience, its web creation capabilities just seem like a bad attempt to bring wysiwyg html editing to Perl.
I realize that I am probably only stating the obvious, as the "Bugs" section of the documentation admits as much, but the mantra of web programming seems to be: "Use CGI!" "Use CGI!" "Use CGI!"
So, I ask you experts out there: is it perhaps time to start chanting "Use LWP!"?
Also, part-and-parcel of the above question, at what point is it time to put old modules out to pasture?
Matt
