This part:

shift( $hash->{shift} )

... confuses perlcritic into thinking you're doing:

shift($arrayref)

[download]

... and it wants you to do:

shift(%{$arrayref})

[download]

... instead. Performing array function directly on arrayrefs is an experimental feature which sucks and is stupid.
