Using a csh instead of bash maybe? With bash, the original works fine. With tcsh, i'm getting the same error about aliasing, which goes away when i remove the backslash: 
$ perl -le '$, = q( ); print q(a)..q(z)'
a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z
