It somehow stops working when I use the regex directly and I cannot see why: 
my $str = q{ x "foo \"bar\"" y };
$str =~ /(?:(?|(?:\")(?:[^\\\"]*(?:\\.[^\\\"]*)*)(?:\")))/;
print $1, "\n";

# prints nothing
