Seeing as how the dot-syntax has been use for quite some time, I think Larry doesn't think it will go out of style. Lots of languages use it, and there's no reason for Perl to be an iconoclast for reasons it doesn't have to be. Perl is different from many languages for many reasons, but there's no reason Perl should use an arrow where other languages use dots. Perl is not going to "become" another language, it will stay Perl, and will grow and mature as time goes on.

In case you didn't know, Perl has a history of borrowing from other languages. A lot. And Perl's going to keep doing it. Why? So that programmers from other languages will feel more comfortable using Perl.
