Actually, it doesn't sound like a job for split. It sounds like a job for a regular expression. Try this:
--my $x = 'E/stYna~ko'; my @chars = $x =~ /(\w\W*)/g; print "@chars\n";
"The first rule of Perl club is you don't talk about Perl club."
