Apparently the recursion is being caused by 
    if (ref $_) {

        $_ .= '';

in Carp.pm (or Carp/Heavy.pm).

I recommend that you copy Carp.pm to MyCarp.pm, and hack away at it. And maybe submit a patch when you're done.
