I just used this code: 
open PRINTER, ">//SERVER/PRINTER";

  print PRINTER $_;
}

where SERVER is the name of the computer with the printer and PRINTER is the name of the printer (s/k/a "sharename"). The program above is the "poor person's lpr" :-).
