I am reading in a file like

       <word>    word 
       <word>    word word word 
       <word>    word
       <word>    word word
       <word>    word word
       <word>    word word
       **************************

I want to read this file and edit lines. This is fine with 
while<>
if /word/ {
}

[download]
etc This just falls through the text line by line checking the next every time. I want to check a line and instead of moving to the next line, I want to move to the previous line and edit it. This is based on me reading a text file line by line finding a line and changing the line immediately before it. Is there a good technique in doing this??? Thanks
