Hmm. If you can, consider upgrading Perl. Using 5.6.1 on HP-UX, I get: 

syntax error at test.pm line 3, at EOF
Compilation failed in require at test.pl line 1.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at test.pl line 1.

Which is what I'd expect. Else it might be FreeBSD-specific.
