Hi all,
I've done a quick program to split files into separate chunks, ending whenever it matches /foo/.
$n=0;open(OUT,">$n.out");
while(<>) {
print OUT;
if (/foo/) {close(OUT);$n++;open(OUT,">$n.out");}
}close(OUT);
Harmless enough, except that if I try to split a vast file (4Gb) on Windows, it terminates without error after outputting c75Mb. The output is flushed, isn't it, so if it's a memory overflow then it must be an input error? But it's only reading in a line at a time rather than slurping the lot surely, so why does the file size matter at all?
The memory usage barely rises during running, and I have plenty of diskspace, before you ask!
cheers,
Sean
