If in a *nix environment, and not wanting to goof with the File::Find module (which are certainly the _right_ way to do this), the fastest way to _type_ the solution may be: 
 foreach $file (split (/\n/,  `find .`)) {
    $newFile = $file;
    $newFile =~ s/foo/bar/;
    rename ($file,$newFile) 
    }
