$openbr="<";
$closebr=">";

and
$wholepage=~s/</$openbr/g;
$wholepage=~s/>/$closebr/g;

[download]
aren't you just saying
$wholepage=~s/</</g;
$wholepage=~s/>/>/g;

[download]
What good does that do?
I may be missing something here.
