I dual boot my laptop, running both linux and win2000. I want to be able to handle (not just read) my mail on both systems using Netscape Mail.
Netscape for windows and Unix use different names for its files so I couldn't just point the mail reader to the base directory.
The mail folders are on a fat32 partiton so they are rw on both systems.
Each time I boot up Linux a perl script I wrote checks the strucure of the folders and creates directories and sym-links that are named correctly on the Linux partition.

Perl solves problems!
