I just received my copy of the May 2002 DDJ and was pleasantly surprised to see they chose to include a Perl article this month (a reasonably rare event). It discusses the use of Perl to generate Javascript at runtime.

Now, I realize that JS isn't terribly popular with many of the locals, but I do believe that it does fill a legitimate need when used in a properly controlled environment, a point well argued in the article itself.

It's worth pointing out that the author also demonstrates, though perhaps without realizing, an excellent facility for code reuse and maximizing exposure. Turns out that those of you who attended YAPC 2001 had an opportunity to, um, preview the DDJ article. Actually, comparing the content between the two, I suspect the YAPC attendees got more detail.

Regardless, DDJ subscribers who weren't able to attend YAPC may appreciate the additional detail.

So, what does this have to do with a monk sighting? Well, the author is a monk. He even demonstrates it in the material. Who is it? Well, in the spirit of the previous holiday, let's just say it's an Easter Egg hunt.

In any event, kudos to the monk in question. Thanks!
