Recently had the opportunity to use the DBI module and found it to be tremendously helpful for my purposes. The power that DBI and perl provide together is great. I bought the book "Programming the perl DBI" and it was a huge help.
But recently I was asked if DBI is reliable enough to be used in a production environment meaning is it safe to rely on DBI when you know that there will be various number of updates to both the RDBMS and the different servers on the system.
Tim Bunce said on his website that
"DBI is a database interface module for Perl. It defines a set of methods, variables and conventions that provide a consistent database interface independent of the actual database being used.''
Does this mean that I should not worry about the usual questions about versions supported or not supported (both DB & OS)? And if there is reliable support available out there, where can I go to read up on this question of mine that support is available or not. You see this is a question similar in nature to the one people have been asking in recent days about support for other open source technologies also. In my opnion this is a very ligitimate concern. And i also know people who would come up with all sorts of hypothesis in support for open source products. Some insight will be helpful here...
By the way I am using Oracle as my RDBMS.
