For those wondering if I am losing the variable outside its 'my' scope: I am printing the result immediately after the calculations, like:

my $columnsum += $_->[$colnum] for @data;
print "Total value = $columnsum";

[download]

...and...

$columnsum = 0;
$columnsum += $_->[$colnum] for @data;
print "Total value = $columnsum";

[download]
