One common exception to the no short name rule is for the bleeding obvious - especially for an object. For example, 
my $ua = LWP::UserAgent->new();

[download]
seems more perlish than 
my $user_agent_for_general_usage = LWP::UserAgent->new();

[download]
A convention that I picked up solely through liberal cut-n-paste of pod examples.
