I'm curious, why did you use delete instead of overwriting the hash ref? This: 
delete @{$self->{'hash'}}{ keys %{$self->{'hash'}} };

must be less efficient than this: 
$self->{hash}={};

[download]
Are you worried about someone else having a reference to the same hash?
