Basically I wanted to say that -w is evil. It causes code that shouldn't generate warnings to generate meaningless warnings that the author never intended it to.
use warnings provides a fully scoped, and selective mechanism for handling warnings. -w is a warning handgrenade that you just threw into someone elses source code. And that isnt very nice.
Am I bitter about chasing a warning (I _always_ chase warnings) that appeared to make no sense?
Yes.
