How would I match the following patterns:
(5 to 8 digits) or (3 alpha chars 1 hyphen 4 chars)
i.e 2312112 or abc-erte
I've tried a few permutations including:

m/[\d]{5,8}|[:alpha:]{3}[-]{1}[:alpha:]{4}/g 
m/[\d]{5,8}|[\D]{3}[-]{1}[\D]{4}/g
