I don't like the "right tool for the job" slogan. 99% of the time that's just a marketing trick to suck you into an optimized/specialized solution. Perl for text processing. Java for web programming. Lisp for AI. FORTRAN for number crunching. This is why people think technology changes all the time. It's only the sales pitch that changes...

Good programming languages have extremely broad application. Perl and Java are both good languages. The decision to use one over the other will almost always be political.
