I recently purchased an ATI TV wonder tv-tuner pci card, and thought of a neat program i could write for it that perl might be great for. The idea is simple, to create an "internet tv" webpage, which streams the TV signal over my T-1 line for the world to see and hear. I understand that this application is illegal if I am retransmitting pay signal (sat/cable etc...) but if i have my VCR playing some home movies of somthing that would be a legal application. I have seen some web cams that stream feeds off the internet for personal security etc.. but don't know if they have sounds and what the quality could be. I checked CPAN but found no modules for TV tuner API or the type of hardware access, just thought i would test the waters of perlmonks.org to see if anyone has had any experience with video/audio compression and streaming? The card works great on linux and windows but i would prefer a linux solution make it more applicable. The most perl experiance i have is typical apps like parsing, web, network etc... but not hardware direct, any ideas and comments are welcome.
