What do you mean by the word idiom? It seems that you're assigning it a meaning more akin to obfuscation. In common use, it is instead an expression, common or syntacticallly common to a language or speaker group, often difficult to understand divorced from the specific context.
I think it would be fair to say that programming *without* Perl idioms leads to far less maintainable code.
