my $ref = \%pkg;

   $ref = exists $ref->{$_} ?

       ( $ref->{$_} = {} ) : $ref->{$_}
}

use Data::Dumper;
warn Dumper(\%pkg);

Sometimes it's usefull if you've done linked lists in Pascal at school :)
