I like it, and I'll certainly remember it.

In your setx example though, I don't think that constants will be local. Even if performed in a block, won't that still put the generated inlinable function into the enclosing package?

Another idea is to have some other code generate the unreadable code. I've seen systems that generate accessor functions, in particular. Might as well generate the fastest code.
