Just a thought-

The idea that one might lose experience (points) strikes me as quite odd. It seems that it would be impossible to lose experience in any realm. Once you've got it, you can't have it taken away (excluding intervention of aliens, the Men in Black, and diety.)

It seems not only more realistic, but more consistent with the theme of this site that instead of an applied 'loss of experience', a religious probation occur. As such, the opportunity for priestly advancement (point gains) would be stunted for a given period of time wherein repentence, reflection, and meditation might take place.

A monk can't be subjected to the loss of time/experience in a real monastery, rather the monk loses the opportunity to advance to higher offices in the priesthood for a designated period of time, or in severe offenses the monk would be expelled from the monastery, formally estranged, excommunicated, or slain.
