And of the several document management systems I've seen, none were based on relational databases. Not that it matters or anything though. The formats I've seen: Domino, INSCI, BerkeleyDB. But then that's not an interesting answer anyway. The point to DM is all the meta data associated with the documents and you can store that however you prefer.
