Works fine with the caveat that the string shouldn't contain any meta characters that glob might want to expand, like '*'. And this: 
for ($text) {
   s/\[/{/g;
   s/\]/}/g;
   s/\|/,/g;
}

[download]
could be written as: $text =~ tr/[|]/{,}/;
