I think the best solution is to encourage the practice of capping off a thread with a summary by the original poster and hopefully a "thank you" to those who took the time to answer. If the OP lets the thread trail off into oblivion then it shouldn't be the responsibility of everyone else or of the system to figure out if the poster was satisfied.
