Are you declaring a lexically scoped variable at the top of your script and then printing it out in a subroutine? E.g. 
my $date = localtime();
&print_date();

sub print_date
{
    print "$date\n";
}

[download]

If the server you're on runs mod_perl, this could cause the symptoms you describe.
