Why not use or, and, eq, ne, lt, gt, le, ge for string operations instead? 
($a) = "abc" =~ /a(b)c/ || 'd'; print $a; # prints 1
($a) = "abc" =~ /a(b)c/ or 'd'; print $a; # prints 'b'
