Otherwise, you just get the first line. Remember that the <FH> syntax normally just returns one line. Clearing out the default line seperator value, with that local, causes it to get the entire file. Clearing it with local ensures that when you're done with the current subroutine, you'll get the old value back, which prevents surprises later.local $/;
