With $path = "/usr/local/bin/foo" ..

• my $foo = ( split ( "/", $path ) )[ -1 ];
• my $foo = ( $path =~ m"/(\w+)$" )[ 0 ];
• There are also modules that will take care of this for you .. File::Spec is one of them.
