Assuming you're on win32 (because you downloaded nmake), you should probably download and install ActiveState Perl. If you are on Unix and would rather not have to compile Perl, you can grab prebuilt binaries.

If you are adament about compiling Perl, it really isn't hard. Just read the files README.$OS (where $OS is the name of your OS (ex/ win32 or unix)) and INSTALL located in the base of the source tree.
