What version of Perl? 5.6? 5.8?

What happens if you use another editor? Open the script in Emacs and see if the accented character looks the way you think it should. (You don't need to know how to use Emacs to do this; just open a terminal window, change to the directory where the script is, and type emacs scriptname.pl and look at the content. You can just close the terminal window when you're done.)
