In the perldoc for 'print' it says: 
 be careful not to follow the print keyword
 with a left parenthesis unless you want the 
corresponding right parenthesis to terminate the arguments to the prin

I would assume this would hold true for any built-in or predeclared subroutine where you are not required to use parens
