Ah, I didn't know you could do that. The Math::BigInt manual page says: 

       Input
         Input values to these routines may be either Math::Big-
         Int objects or strings of the form
         "/^[+-]?[\d]+\.?[\d]*E?[+-]?[\d]*$/".
