If you want to stick with a tree analogy, you could think of XSLT as mechanism for whitewashing the trunk, tying on yellow ribbons, hanging Christmas lights, gathering nuts, and sawing it up for lumber - all in the chosen season.
More prosaicly, I think of it as a stylesheet mechanism. It provides a generalized "stringification" for the presentation of XML elements.
