Without knowing what you are intending to write it's pretty hard to recomend specific modules but you could look at Favourite modules April 2003 and it's parent Favourite modules March 2002. Another good place to look is Tutorials, if you are considering writing your own modules I recommend tachyon's excellent Simple Module Tutorial.
