I've found "Audio::Play" on CPAN: The readme claims it can play sound via /dev/audio or NAS under unix and even under WIN32 (with code from timidity, the author says)
I know is not exactly what you are looking for, however there is a little application in the distribution that could suggest you a different approach to the problem.
