trying to write simple script to put lines into error msgs

code:
# progam to place line numbers in all error messages
use strict;

my @this = qx(ls *pl); #adjust this to grab your programs
my $die = qq!dienice("!; #string starting die message

foreach my $file (@this) {
chomp $file;
open(SCRIPT, '$file') || die "$file DIE DIE DIE!!!!! $!";

my $line_num = 0;
my $test = 0;

my @newfile = <SCRIPT>;
close SCRIPT;

foreach my $line ( @newfile ) {
$line_num++;
if ( $line =~ m/$die/ ) {
$line =~ s/$die\d+\b/$die$line_num /i;
$test = 1;
}

open(NEW, '>$file') || die "DIE DIE DIE!!!!! $!";
print NEW "@newfile";
close NEW;
}
}

getting 'delete_tmp.pl DIE DIE DIE!!!!! No such file or directory at fixLines line 9'

when ls gives:

./ delete_tmp.pl* frontpage.pl* index.pl* update_tmp.pl*
../ fixLines include.pl* rep_req.pl*

In reply to 'no such file' when it's there. by jptxs
