You might be interested in my Mozilla sidebar (which also works with IE, I am told). Progress is stalled at the moment because it turns out that it's "good enough" right now for my needs. What I really have to do is couple it to a DB backend, so that I can just ask the ticker to give me the nodes created in the last five minutes (rather than 24 hours), and then produce the sidebar out of the DB.

This would also let me create day/week/month sidebars, handy for catching up when you've been off the net for a while. In the meantime, enjoy (and relieve the PM DB of the effort of generating the Newest Nodes page for you :).
