Look at your first regex again. /^(\w+)+/ looks quite funny :) aww he decided to remove the double '+'ing :(

Anyhow... just another way of writing the regex: 

my %hotlist = map { m#\A(\S+)\s+(.*)\z#; $1 => $2 } <DATA>;
