10% of the nodes are being posted inside the pmsig area.

That seems high. Any idea why this mistake is happening?

Hiding signatures just leaves a bunch of nodes appearing to be empty.

Only if you ban all signatures. Personally I just strip out the ones that I find annoying on a monk-by-monk basis.
