I was wondering if there is any possibility of putting comments in the search results to mark the beginning and ending of the result set and the beginning and ending of individual items within the set.

This request comes from purely selfish motives, but I'm hoping that others might find it useful. I've recently been investigating the some of the extra functionality of Mozilla and hit upon the search plugins. Since I find myself searching perlmonks a bit, I looked around for a plugin and found this by boo_radley. It works fairly well but gives a lot of junk when used in the sidebar. I have attempted to remedy this, but have been a bit unsuccessful because of a lack of unique markings to denote the boundaries of the result set and its individual items.
