I've been thinking about setting up a Perlmonks setiathome group, but I don't want to do so unless other monks are interested in joining. I imagine that many monks here have quite a bit of processing power and we could do a great job of contributing to the science of setiathome.

If you are one of the three people on the planet who has not heard of setiathome, it's a scientific project to search for signs of extraterrestrial life in the universe. Essentially, each user downloads a small program to their computer and it periodically receives data from a radio telescope (currently Arecibo), processes that data, and returns it to the setiathome group. By creating a distributed computing network, they have created the largest supercomputer in existence. A news article on setiathome can be found here.

If I get enough monks who say they'll join, I'll start the group and post a link.
