I attempted to answer this question years ago at A Little History on 0D0A after reading Network Programming with Perl. Please read the node and more importantly it's replies, then, save up $50 and buy that book as it contains 4 times it's value in knowledge.

Also, you really really really should use a module like MIME::Lite to send emails. Please read A Guide to Installing Modules if you don't already know how, especially the part about non-priviledged installs if you don't got root. ;)
